Specifications for Buildings

Specifications for buildings which may be erected by tenants on individual allotments after 1 April 1997

Under Hale Allotment Society Byelaws, buildings may only be erected by new plot holders after satisfactory completion of the three month probationary period.

Glasshouses

May only be constructed of, aluminium, softwood or hardwood and to a traditional design with maximum dimensions of:

  • Length: 3.00 metres (9ft 9ins approx.)
  • Width: 2.4 metres (8ft approx.)
  • Height: 2 metres (6ft 6ins approx.) to the eaves and 3 metres (9ft 9ins approx.) to the ridge.

All measurements are from ground level.

  • Roof: Must be ridged along the entire length of the building
  • Covering: From the ground level up to a height of 700mm (2ft 6ins) may be of timber, aluminium sheet, perspex or glass. Above this height may either be glass, perspex or clear rigid polythene

No glasshouse may be constructed from waste materials such as old window frames, glazed doors or wooden pallets etc. which have been fixed together.

Sheds

May only be constructed of soft or hardboard timber (either close boarded, ship lapped, or tongue and groove), and to a traditional design with maximum dimensions of:

  • Length: 3.00 metres (9ft 9ins approx.
  • Width: 2.4 metres (8ft approx.)
  • Height: 2 metres (6ft 6ins approx.) to the eaves and 3 metres (9ft 9ins approx.) to the ridge.

All measurements are from ground level.

  • Roof: May be ridged along the entire length of the building or pent roofed.

No sheds may be constructed from waste materials such as old doors / wooden pallets etc. which have been fixed together.

The positioning of any building will be within the prescribed area as determined on the site plan which may be inspected by:

  • Contacting the site Secretary, or,
  • Environmental Services, P.O. Box 30, Chapel Road, Sale. M33 7HX

No more than 1 shed and/ or 1 glasshouse may be erected on a whole or half plot. Buildings currently erected on individual allotments are exempt from these regulations provided they are deemed safe by the Council Officers. If the tenancy changes, these regulations will apply to the new tenant .

Hale Allotment Society Bye-Laws:

From 1st May 2015, the following rule applies:

“If a member wishes to have both a greenhouse and a shed on a half plot, the total area must not exceed 48sq. feet.”

Buildings currently erected on individual allotments are exempt from these regulations. If the tenancy changes, these regulations will apply to the new tenant.
